A single-wavelength 808nm diode handles 80% of patient cases for most clinics. You add 755nm for fine, light-colored hair that 808nm struggles with. You add 1064nm for Fitzpatrick V-VI patients where 808nm risks hyperpigmentation at higher fluences. If 80% of your revenue comes from patients who would be fine with 808nm alone, the extra $2,000-3,000 for triple-wavelength is a future upgrade, not a day-one requirement. Step 3: Power Rating and Real Throughput
Power rating determines how many patients you can treat per day without the machine overheating or slowing down. A legitimate manufacturer sends all three within hours — they have them ready because every serious buyer asks. If you get excuses about “proprietary information” or “confidential documents,” those are not excuses — they are red flags. Take the 510(k) number and search it at the FDA database yourself. If it does not appear, or if the device description does not match what you are buying, find a different supplier. This five-minute check has saved more money than any negotiation tactic ever will.
Step 6: Calculate Total 5-Year Cost, Not Purchase Price
The purchase price is the smallest number that matters. Add it all up: machine cost + shipping + customs duties and tariffs + installation and on-site training + first-year spare parts inventory + 5-year consumable costs. A $2,500 factory-direct diode machine with near-zero consumables and user-replaceable parts has a 5-year TCO of roughly $3,500. Step 7: Demo Before You Commit
Fly to the factory or a trade show. Bring a laser power meter. Test the machine on multiple settings. Talk to the engineer, not the salesperson. Ask about spare parts availability: “If the power supply fails in month 13, how many days to ship a replacement to my city?” If the answer is longer than 5 business days, ask if they have a service partner in your region. If they do not, factor two weeks of downtime into your cost calculation. The right machine from the wrong supplier — one who cannot support you after the sale — is no better than the wrong machine.
